Sheku Bayoh died in police custody Kirkcaldy in May 2015 after being restrained by up to six police officers. Aamer Anwar & Company began acting on a pro-bono basis for the family and led the justice campaign on behalf of the Bayoh family to ensure that the pressure was kept on the Police, Crown Office and the PIRC.
In 2019, the Lord Advocate James Wolfe KC advised that Crown Office would not prosecute any of the officers or Police Scotland, after having carried out a 4 ½ year investigation.
Because of the campaign fought by the Bayoh family and Aamer Anwar & Company, the Scottish Government announced an unprecedented public inquiry that began on the 10th of May 2022 in Edinburgh and is expected to last two years.
Without Aamer Anwar & Company at the heart of the family’s campaign for justice it is widely accepted that a public inquiry would never have taken place.
For the Bayoh family this case is a fundamental test of the accountability of those who claim to be our guardians of law and order. In a civilised society there must never be a hiding place for those officers who break the law.
