PRESS RELEASE – DEATH IN POLICE CUSTODY 2022 IN KIRKCALDY
PRESS RELEASE – Embargoed Wednesday 15th February, 10:00am
Death in Police Custody 2022 in Kirkcaldy
Family Press Conference on Wednesday 15th February at 10:00am
Followed by meeting on the same day with the Lord Advocate at 11:00am
In 2022 a man aged 37 died following contact with Kirkcaldy Police and being restrained for a prolonged period of time.
What is surprising is that there appears to be no record of the death following police contact on the PIRC website as would be the norm for live investigations.
The family have significant concerns that the case has been shrouded in secrecy over the last year.
The family wonder whether the involvement of Kirkcaldy Police and the start of Sheku Bayoh Public Inquiry has anything at all to do with the secrecy and lack of information as to how their son died.
After his death the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service instructed the Police Investigations & Review Commissioner (PIRC) to examine the facts and circumstances surrounding the death.
The family were advised by the PIRC not to speak to the media after their son’s death following his being restrained by Kirkcaldy Police and other agencies, over the course of the last year they have had little or no information, other than a heavily redacted autopsy report.
The family will hold a Press Conference on Wednesday 15th February 2023 at 10am until 11am at Edinburgh Central Library, George IV Bridge, EH1 1EG.
The press conference will be attended by the parents, three sisters and uncle of the deceased at which point the full details of the circumstances, the name of deceased and significant concerns will released.
The press conference will be followed by the family along with their lawyers meeting the Lord Advocate, Dorothy Bain KC at Crown office & Procurator Fiscal Service, 29 Chambers St, Edinburgh EH1 1LA at 11.00am for a meeting expected to last up to two hours.
Please advise prior to Wednesday who from your office is attending the press conference.
